Ranking Member Robert Garcia Launches Probe into Lutnick’s Interference with US-Canada Bridge for Billionaire Donor

Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, launched an investigation into the Department of Commerce’s attack on the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting the U.S. and Canada, just hours after Secretary Lutnick met with Mr. Matthew Moroun, whose family owns the competing Ambassador Bridge and has donated more than $605,000 to President Trump and the Republican party. This comes days after Ranking Member Garcia called for Secretary Lutnick to be fired over lying about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

“President Trump is once again attacking our neighbor to the North, threatening a new bridge that would help support our economy and thousands of good American jobs, mere hours after Howard Lutnick met with the billionaire owner of a competing bridge,” said Ranking Member Robert Garcia.

“The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which President Trump once touted as a ‘vital economic link between our two countries,’ has been under construction for years. The bridge will connect Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, expanding access along one of the busiest connections between the U.S. and Canada. Despite these public benefits, the Moroun family, which for decades has privately owned and operated the Ambassador Bridge that currently connects Detroit and Windsor, has long attempted to derail the project, as the new Gordie Howe International Bridge will likely result in reduced toll revenue on the Ambassador Bridge,” wrote Ranking Member Robert Garcia in his letter to Secretary Lutnick. “The Moroun family’s latest attempt to delay or block the opening of the bridge by directly appealing to you and to the Trump Administration appears to have proven successful.”
