Ranking Member Robert Garcia Demands Answers from Director of Federal Housing Finance Agency on Partisan Investigations
Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Director of Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Bill Pulte demanding records on his weaponization of the FHFA to attack Donald Trump’s political enemies. As the court case against New York Attorney General Leticia James falls apart under scrutiny, new reports raise serious concerns that Director Pulte has bypassed standard investigative procedures, fired internal watchdogs at Fannie Mae, and contributed to the White House’s recent dismissal of Acting Inspector General John “Joe” Allen. These actions appear part of a broader effort to dismantle internal safeguards and pursue baseless, politically-motivated investigations into prominent Democrats.
“Instead of focusing on the real work of making housing more affordable for hard-working families, Director Pulte continues to weaponize the Federal Housing Finance Agency, targeting anyone Donald Trump views as an enemy. The dismissal of the Acting Inspector General and firing of Fannie Mae’s ethics and compliance team raises even more flags about the troubling politicization. With Americans struggling through a severe housing shortage, our resources shouldn’t be going towards attacking Trump’s targets. Oversight Democrats won't stop until we get answers,” said Ranking Member Robert Garcia.
In the letter, Ranking Member Robert Garcia wrote, “The federal government should be used to serve the American people, not for Donald Trump’s revenge fantasies. Your recent actions as Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director have politicized what has previously been a non-partisan agency that plays a critical role in providing housing finance to American taxpayers. During your time in office, you have publicly leveled accusations of mortgage fraud exclusively at an array of Donald Trump’s political enemies, following public demands from the President.”
In September, Ranking Member Garcia launched the investigation into the FHFA by sending a letter to Acting Inspector General John “Joe” Allen, who has since been fired.
