Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Ranking Member Elijah E. Cummings and Congresswoman Jackie Speier, joined by Democratic Members of the Subcommittee on TARP and Financial Services, sent a letter to GOP Chairman Patrick McHenry today asking him to apologize for his “disrespectful treatment” of Professor Elizabeth Warren, Special Advisory to the Secretary of the Treasury, during yesterday’s hearing.

“During yesterday’s Subcommittee hearing, you impugned the character of a dedicated public official who is doing nothing more than trying to serve the interests of American consumers,” the letter reads. “Your disrespectful treatment of Professor Warren undermines the integrity of our Committee and offends the standards of the House of Representatives.”

At yesterday’s hearing, McHenry accused Professor Warren of giving misleading testimony at a previous hearing and lying about her agreed upon departure time. In a press release following the hearing, McHenry added that he was shocked by Warren’s “blatant sense of entitlement.”

In the letter, the Democratic Members said these were “inappropriate and false accusations. It is unacceptable for any Member of Congress… to treat witnesses in this manner.”
