Cummings Applauds Court Decision Upholding Dept. of Education’s Gainful Employment Regulation

Washington, DC (June 24, 2015)—Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to yesterday's court decision upholding the Department of Education’s gainful employment regulation:

“This is terrific news.  Now, rather than spending millions of dollars more fighting a regulation designed to protect students, the for-profit sector and its lobbyists should work on improving their educational services, helping students fulfill their dreams, and becoming better stewards of taxpayer-funded financial aid."

Cummings previously attended the Gainful Employment rulemaking sessions and is the lead sponsor of the Proprietary Education Oversight Coordination Act, H.R. 747.

In 2012, an Oversight Committee Democratic staff investigation found limited or non-existent ties between student performance and executive compensation at the 13 largest publically traded for-profit colleges.

In April, Cummings and Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a bicameral letter‎ expressing concern to the Department of Education about Corinthian Colleges, which was found by federal and state regulators to have engaged in unfair and deceptive practices.
