Acting Ranking Member Lynch Doubles Down on Demand for Musk’s SF-86 and Other Background Investigation Documents in Light of Bombshell Reporting on Musk’s Drug Use
Washington, D.C. (May 30, 2025)— Today, Rep. Stephen F. Lynch, Acting Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent letters to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, White House Chief of Staff Susan Wiles, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and FBI Director Kash Patel reiterating the Committee’s demands for all information pertaining to the disclosure of Elon Musk’s alleged history of drug use following reporting that the head of DOGE and Special Government Employee’s drug consumption “went well beyond occasional use.” Committee Democrats first requested this information – along with information on Musk’s ties to foreign governments like China and Russia, Musk’s growing treasure chest of government contracts, and other potential liabilities that would make him vulnerable to coercion and corruption or cloud his judgment – on May 1, 2025. So far, the Trump Administration has failed to respond, choosing instead to shield Mr. Musk and hide this information from the American public.
“The [department] has failed to respond to this request, which has only grown more pertinent as recent reporting indicates that Mr. Musk consumed extensive amounts of illicit and prescription drugs that ‘went well beyond occasional use’ while on the 2024 presidential campaign trail with Donald Trump.” wrote Acting Ranking Member Lynch.
Since the release of Committee Democrats’ initial letter, reporting from The New York Times has cemented the Committee’s need for information regarding Mr. Musk’s significant drug use, particularly whether it was disclosed on his Form SF-86 and other legally binding federal paperwork. Fraudulent reporting on these reports carries criminal penalties. The lack of urgency demonstrated by the Trump Administration in providing the requested documentation reflects intentional obstruction and a potential cover up by the Trump-Musk Administration.
“The American people deserve to know the history and extent of Mr. Musk’s drug use, whether he continued his drug use while a special government employee and senior adviser to President Donald Trump, and any influence illicit drugs may have had on his actions and decisions as a special government employee,” concluded Acting Ranking Member Lynch.
To appropriately evaluate the history and extent of Mr. Musk’s drug use, the disclosure of such use in official documents, and any potential influence illicit drugs had on his actions and decisions as senior advisor to President Trump, Acting Ranking Member Lynch has requested all relevant documents, materials, and information be provided to the committee by June 13, 2025.
