Acting Ranking Member Lynch Asks President Trump Whether Elon Musk Was Under the Influence While Working in the White House

June 4, 2025

Washington, D.C. (June 4, 2025)—Today, Rep. Stephen F. Lynch, Acting Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to President Donald Trump seeking information concerning his knowledge of whether Elon Musk was under the influence of illicit drugs while serving as a Special Government Employee and White House Senior Adviser.  In these prominent roles, Elon Musk used his extensive powers and influence to direct lucrative government contracts to his network of companiesexecute mass firings of federal workersdeprive the world’s malnourished and neediest children of food and medical supplies, undermine Social Securitysurveil and stockpile Americans most sensitive data and information, and generally make life harder and more expensive for the American people

On May 30, 2025, as result of the New York Times’ bombshell reporting that Mr. Musk consumed extensive amounts of illicit and prescription drugs (including ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms, and ketamine) while serving on the 2024 campaign trail, Acting Ranking Member Lynch doubled down on the Committee’s previous demand for Musk’s background investigation materials to properly evaluate the history and extent of the drug use, the disclosure of such use in official documents, and any potential influence illicit drugs had on his actions and decisions as senior advisor to President Trump.  Today’s letter to President Trump seeks to determine if and when the President knew his closest advisor was under the influence.

“Given his prominent role in the Trump Administration, the American people deserve to know the history and extent of Mr. Musk’s drug use and any influence illicit drugs may have had on his efforts to illegally and recklessly dismantle our government.  If Mr. Musk is struggling with substance abuse, it is my hope that he gets the assistance and treatment he needs,” wrote Acting Ranking Member Lynch.

In his letter, Rep. Lynch highlights past reporting showing similar accounts of Mr. Musk’s history of drug use, in which his use of LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, and psychedelic mushrooms at private parties was a consistent concern for executives and board members at his companies who feared the consumption of illegal drugs may have affected his actions and may have major consequences on business.

“The drastic and erratic nature of Mr. Musk’s decisions and actions as a government employee, coupled with the reports of his drug use, begs the question of whether Mr. Musk was under the influence of illicit substances while working in your White House.  The American people deserve to know whether Mr. Musk was under the influence while he gleefully took a ‘chainsaw’ to our federal government,” concluded Rep. Lynch.
