WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Committee on the Judiciary, demanded answers from Mark Zuckerberg, Chairman and CEO of Meta, after the platform shut down the No Kings Coalition’s Instagram account during nationwide voter mobilization events on October 17, 2026. This complete shutdown prevented the public from accessing important event details and blocked the event organizers from accessing the account for hours.
“Mark Zuckerberg has spent years building ties to Donald Trump. The American people are right to be suspicious when his company silences the No King’s Coalition on a historic day of mobilization, ahead of the midterm election. We are demanding answers and accountability from the billionaires who have partnered with Trump and his authoritarian agenda, and we need answers on how Meta failed,” said Ranking Member Robert Garcia.
“Meta keeps blaming technical glitches, but somehow the glitches always seem to work in Donald Trump’s favor. I didn’t know technical glitches were such big Trump supporters. Meta’s latest 'malfunction' silenced the No Kings Coalition’s account as Americans joined a historic nationwide mobilization to defend democracy. This glitch blocked access to basic organizing and safety information just weeks before Election Day. Even Mr. Zuckerberg’s computer errors seem to know whose ring to kiss. We need records explaining how this happened and whether anyone in the Trump Administration had a hand in it,” said Ranking Member Jamie Raskin.
In the letter to Meta Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Ranking Members Robert Garcia and Jamie Raskin wrote, “As one of the country’s largest social media platforms and an Internet service provider enjoying legal immunity under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, Meta has a responsibility not to interfere with the integrity of our elections or infringe on the right of the public to engage in constitutionally protected political activity. Congress has an important interest in protecting and advancing free speech and free and fair elections. Accordingly, we request a briefing from the company on its election security efforts and these incidents, no later than November 9, 2026.”
