Ranking Member Robert Garcia Statement on President Trump’s Pathetic Attempt At Distracting The American Public By Militarizing Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement after President Trump announced the deployment of 1,000 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C.: 

“Donald Trump’s economy is failing, his Epstein files cover-up won’t go away, and public support for his agenda is way down. So it’s no surprise that he is trying to distract the American public. President Trump’s decision to deploy more than 1,000 military troops onto the streets of our nation’s capital is an unnecessary stunt.  And it is 100% politically motivated.  Despite Republican claims, violent crime in D.C. is at a 30-year low, including Trump’s first term. Committee Democrats have long supported Washington D.C.’s right to decide how to govern itself–and we will keep championing this right for its more than 700,000 residents.”
