Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement after Oversight Republicans weaponized the Committee to attack the husband of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, demanding financial disclosures from his companies despite no evidence of wrongdoing.
“Oversight Republicans are abusing the power of the House Oversight Committee to target and harass Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and her family. In fact, they recently warned about the dangerous precedent this would set. Member investigations have always been led by the Ethics Committee. By abandoning their own standard, Oversight Republicans have opened the door to Oversight investigations into misconduct by Republican Members of Congress, including insider stock trading, violence against women, and other credible allegations of wrongdoing. Committee Democrats will aggressively uphold ethics in Washington,” said Ranking Member Robert Garcia.
On January 7, 2026, Chairman Comer explicitly opposed using the Oversight Committee to target Members of Congress, arguing that such investigations belong with the Ethics Committee. He even joined Democrats to block a subpoena designed to harass Congresswoman Omar. Chairman Comer said, “We can do pretty much what we want in this committee, but I just want to make it very clear so we don't go down this road… That's what the Ethics Committee is set up to do.”
