Ranking Member Robert Garcia Demands Investigation into Trump Administration’s Alleged Illegal Use of Government Resources to Promote a False MAGA Agenda
Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Jamieson Greer, Acting Special Counsel, demanding that the Office of Special Counsel immediately investigate the Trump Administration’s apparent illegal use of government resources to promote a false and partisan Republican political agenda, following political messages regarding the current government shutdown being posted to at least one agency website and via official government email to thousands of federal employees.
“Donald Trump and his Administration are blatantly weaponizing the federal government and likely violating federal law to deflect blame for their shutdown. Our federal agencies are supposed to work for the American people, not one political party or ideology.
Republicans control the Senate, the House, and the White House, and instead of taking responsibility for their shutdown or working in good faith with Democrats to reopen our government, this Administration is likely breaking the law to promote their false, extreme partisan political agenda on official government sites.
This is yet another example of how Donald Trump is putting retribution and his own selfish interests ahead of the truth and the American people.
We must investigate these likely violations of the Hatch Act to make sure that the federal government works in the best interests of the American people, not one party or Administration,” said Ranking Member Robert Garcia.
“On September 30, 2025, the Trump Administration posted political messages regarding the current government shutdown on at least one agency website and via official government emails to thousands of federal employees. The Hatch Act imposes clear restrictions on the political activity of federal executive branch employees and does not allow activity “directed toward the success or failure of a political party, partisan political group, or candidate for partisan political office.” Given the Trump Administration’s blatant violation of the law, I request that the Office of Special Counsel immediately open an investigation into this clear misconduct, and for you to cooperate with our Committee as we investigate this blatant misuse of taxpayer dollars for political purposes.” wrote Ranking Member Robert Garcia in the letter.
