Ranking Member Robert Garcia Demands Investigation After DOGE Endangers Social Security Info of Millions of Americans

September 23, 2025

Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Acting Inspector General Michelle L. Anderson at the Social Security Administration demanding an investigation after a whistleblower revealed that members of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) copied the entire Social Security database, which contains the sensitive personal information of over 300 million Americans, and illegally moved the information to an unsecure cloud server. This violates security protocol and threatens millions of people’s privacy, financial security, and access to vital benefits.

“Let’s be clear: the Department of Government Efficiency endangered the highly sensitive data of millions of Americans, which requires an immediate investigation,” said Ranking Member Robert Garcia. “Thanks to a brave and highly experienced whistleblower, we have clear and compelling information showing the Trump Administration failed time and time again to protect the privacy of folks across the country. We must get to the bottom of what DOGE really did while embedded at the Social Security Administration, and hold individuals accountable.”

“This report is just the latest in a series of grave failures to protect Americans’ privacy and security. The Trump Administration has exposed critical servers at our nuclear security laboratories, every federal employee’s personal information, and agencies across the executive branch to potential cyber-attack. DOGE’s repeated failures to follow federal laws that protect Americans’ privacy and security, paired with Republicans’ steep cuts to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency budget and the Administration’s abysmal operational security practices, expose every American to unprecedented cyber risk,” wrote Ranking Member Garcia in the letter.
