Ranking Member Raskin’s Statement on Republicans Issuing Criminal Referrals

June 5, 2024

Washington, D.C. (June 5, 2024)—Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, issued the following statement after the Republican Chairs on the Committees on Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means issued criminal referrals to the Department of Justice as part of their sham impeachment investigation:

“Today, Chairmen Comer, Jordan, and Smith were finally forced to admit the spectacular failure and collapse of their 17-month impeachment ‘investigation.’  After collecting 3.8 million pages of documents and more than 80 hours of testimony from 19 witnesses, they throw up their hands and confess that they have no evidence of any wrongdoing, much less a high crime and misdemeanor by President Biden.

“This agonizingly protracted and completely fruitless investigation has proven only that President Biden was not part of, did not profit from, and took no official actions to benefit his family members’ business ventures.

“Of course, the Chairmen’s 60-page letter is a last-ditch effort to distract from the exoneration of President Biden by offering ‘gotcha’ accusations against the President’s son and brother based on their efforts to recollect years-old financial transactions, text messages, and conversations in the course of this interminable fishing expedition.

“Above all else, this inquiry has proven yet again that Americans face a choice between two basic visions for the presidency:  Joe Biden, a career public servant, who has spent his life fighting for the American people, stands for the common good and strong democracy—while Donald Trump, a twice-impeached career grifter, adjudicated fraudster, sexual assaulter, defamer of women, and convicted felon sees the presidency as an instrument for unceasing self-enrichment, self-aggrandizement and revenge.”
