Ranking Member Raskin Urges Chairman Comer to Reprimand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for Public Display of ‘Gratuitous and Irrelevant’ Pornographic Photographs During Committee Hearing

Asks Oversight Chair to Condemn Rep. Greene’s Violation of Rules of Decorum

Washington, D.C. (July 27, 2023)—Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, sent a letter to Oversight Chairman James Comer urging him to disavow Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's public display of multiple nude photographs during a Committee hearing last week, citing that it violates Congressional rules of decorum and undermines the dignity of the House of Representatives.

"If Rep. Greene's completely gratuitous and irrelevant display of pornographic images at our televised hearing does not violate the Congressional rules of decorum, then we have no rules of Congressional decorum. This type of display is a violation of House rules, and, as you yourself have recognized, also ‘counter to a credible investigation,'" wrote Ranking Member Raskin.

During the hearing, the official Majority Oversight Committee Twitter account further disseminated Rep. Greene's appalling actions by retweeting her five minutes of questioning, including her display of lewd images, even as Fox News and other cable networks censored the images on-air. In an interview following the hearing and in a subsequent conversation with a reporter, Chairman Comer failed to disavow her lewd display and instead expressed support for her actions.

"I would like to remind you that under House rules, as Chair of this Committee you have an obligation to enforce the rules of decorum fairly and equitably. It is incumbent upon you to make clear that Rep. Greene's use of pornographic images at a public hearing clearly violated House rules and to ensure that we are not subject to repeated incidents or similarly unacceptable actions in future hearings. If this was acceptable for Rep. Greene, you are establishing it as acceptable for all Members. I therefore urge you to publicly reprimand Rep. Greene by issuing a statement condemning her actions as an affront to the dignity, propriety, and decorum of the Committee," continued Ranking Member Raskin.
