Press Release

Washington, D.C. (July 19, 2023)—Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, issued the following statement after the Committee conducted a voluntary transcribed interview with an AV/IT Specialist at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement:

“As part of their ongoing effort to distract the American people from former President Trump’s 37-count indictment for mishandling classified documents and obstructing law enforcement, Committee  Republicans convened yet another transcribed interview on President Biden’s handling of records.  Much to my Republican colleagues’ disappointment, the testimony confirmed that he did not observe anyone—including President Biden’s attorneys—remove documents or boxes from the Penn Biden Center.  Contrary to Chairman Comer’s claims that the closet storing President Biden’s materials was unlocked, their testimony confirmed that he personally unlocked and locked the closet.  These facts stand in stark contrast to the shocking recklessness of former President Trump who willfully retained and stored our nation’s most sensitive national security documents in unlocked and unsecure areas throughout his Mar-a-Lago Club, including in a bathroom, a bathtub, and a ballroom in which events and gatherings took place with thousands of people present.”
