Ranking Member Connolly Requests Chair Comer Invite Musk to Upcoming Hearing on “Rightsizing Government” Following His Government Infiltration

February 3, 2025

Washington, D.C. (February 3, 2025)—Today, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Chairman James Comer requesting the Chair invite Elon Musk to the Committee’s hearing on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 titled “Rightsizing Government.”

"On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will hold a hearing titled ‘Rightsizing Government.’  In the two weeks since the start of the Trump Administration, Elon Musk—a billionaire oligarch, close friend and trusted confidante of President Trump—has already shown his outsized role in the restructuring and ‘rightsizing’ of the federal government.  As the Oversight Committee uses the upcoming hearing to examine the ‘size and complexity of the federal government,’ I request that you invite Mr. Musk to appear as a witness,” wrote Ranking Member Connolly.

This invitation follows weeks of reporting that Musk and associates from his “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) have infiltrated government agencies in their quest to seize government documents, access sensitive systems, and purge the federal workforce of dedicated career civil servants.  Within the past 24 hours, Musk’s efforts have led to the attempted illegal shutdown of the United States Agency of International Development (USAID) and the displacement of thousands of government employees.

It is unacceptable for Chairman Comer and House Oversight Republicans to forego their responsibility to seek answers from Musk.
