Press Release

Washington, D.C. (March 14, 2024)—Today, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs, Rep. Greg Casar, and Rep. Dan Goldman released a video to commemorate Sunshine Week—a nationwide initiative meant to highlight the importance of government transparency.

Ranking Member Jamie Raskin: It’s Congressman Jamie Raskin from Maryland’s beautiful eighth Congressional District.  I’m the Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee.  I lead the Democrats on the Committee, and I’m excited to kick off the 20th annual Sunshine Week, which serves to remind all of America about the fundamental importance of having an open and transparent and accountable government.

Rep. Greg Casar: As America’s Truth Squad here on Capitol Hill, Oversight Committee Democrats are committed to making sure we have a transparent government that works for the people and isn’t working for con artists and grifters.

Ranking Member Jamie Raskin: In honor of Sunshine Week, we’re releasing a Government Accountability Office report on the significant backlog of Freedom of Information Act requests along with urgent recommendations on how to address this backlog of FOIA requests.

The Freedom of Information Act is the cornerstone of open government law, and it gives the American people access to the records that document how and why government makes decisions.

Throughout this Congress, Committee Democrats have fought hard to increase transparency for the American people.

For example, we released a report documenting how Donald J. Trump collected at least $8 million from foreign governments and adversaries while he was President, in direct violation of the foreign Emoluments Clause which bans foreign payments from Kings, princes and foreign states without Congressional consent.

Rep. Greg Casar: We reported on the Trump family’s failure to disclose and account for $250,000 worth of gifts from foreign governments while Donald J. Trump was in office.

Ranking Member Jamie Raskin: We urged Chairman James Comer to subpoena Jared Kushner for taking $2 billion from Saudi Arabia’s murderous monarch Prince Mohamed bin Salman shortly after leaving his official White House role where he reshaped Middle East policy in the interests of Saudi Arabia.

We called for an investigation into U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for failing to report or repay hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans from billionaire sugar daddies.

Rep. Robert Garcia: And another thing about Sunshine Week, is it illuminates the truth and dispels conspiracy theories.

Rep. Dan Goldman: We have called out our Republican colleagues for using this Committee to amplify propaganda and disinformation peddled by Russian agents and far right extremists.

Ranking Member Jamie Raskin: As the leader of the Democrats’ Truth Squad on the House Oversight Committee, I am proud of the work we have done to dismantle the lies and uphold the truth because truth is the very foundation of democracy.
