Oversight Committee and Black Maternal Health Caucus to Hold Press Conference Ahead of Black Maternal Health Hearing
**MEDIA ADVISORY**
Washington, D.C. (May 3, 2021)—On Thursday, May 6, 2021, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, will hold a press conference with Members and advocates ahead of the Committee's hearing that will examine the maternal mortality and morbidity crisis experienced by Black birthing people in America.
Across the United States, Black people are at disproportionate risk of death and adverse health outcomes before, during, and after pregnancy. This public health crisis is rooted in America's historical and ongoing legacy of structural racism and manifests today in racial disparities inside and outside of birth settings.
Black people are three to four times more likely to experience pregnancy-related death than their white counterparts, and they experience higher rates of pregnancy complications, infant loss, and miscarriage regardless of socioeconomic status, geography, or education. The coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately harmed Black people in the United States and worsened pre-existing health disparities.
