Jamie Raskin Rails Against Republicans at Hunter Biden-less Deposition (Exclusive)

The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee told Republicans on Wednesday at a scheduled deposition for Hunter Biden, the president's son, that the GOP is "obstructing its own investigation," according to remarks obtained by The Messenger.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., one of the most prominent Democrats fighting against the Republican investigations into the president, criticized Republicans for not allowing Hunter Biden to testify in a public setting in their impeachment inquiry. The president's son on Wednesday defied a congressional subpoena by not sitting for a deposition — but showing up in person on the Capitol grounds to defend himself in a surprise televised statement.

The first son has repeatedly offered to testify live, in person, before the GOP impeachment committees, but has been rebuffed by the chairmen.

"Chairmen Comer and [Jim] Jordan will not take yes for an answer and are instead obstructing their own investigation by preventing Hunter Biden from appearing before the Committee and the American people because they know the truth and the facts will only serve to further expose this embarrassing impeachment inquiry for the sham that it is," Raskin said at the deposition, according to his prepared remarks.

At his impromptu appearance on Capitol Hill on Wednesday morning, Biden railed Republicans for distorting aspects of his private and professional life. He said the party has belittled his battle with addiction and demonized his father's love for him. The first son said he was at the Capitol to testify publicly, but skipped out on the deposition.

But Hunter Biden's lawyers argued in the weeks running up to Wednesday's scheduled deposition that Republicans have weaponized private depositions and selectively leaked information from those testimonies thus far in the probe. Raskin dinged Republicans on the same point.

"Chairmen Comer and Jordan have denied him the ability to testify because they are not interested in giving the people the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but rather in leaking distorted half-truths and quarter-truths," Raskin said.

Republicans, however, argued that Hunter Biden was seeking special treatment in trying to only appear for a public hearing. Comer argued after Hunter Biden did not show for the deposition that the president’s son “doesn’t get to set the rules.”

“He’s set the rules for his whole life,” Comer said, threatening anew to slap Biden with contempt of Congress charges.

While they get the ball rolling on contempt of Congress charges against the president's son, the party is also expected to approve a resolution formally approving its impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden later on Wednesday.

But Raskin told Republicans that he didn't blame them for not allowing Hunter to publicly testify: "It would only lead to an even greater exposure of this fraud and an even greater humiliation of those perpetrating it."
