House Republicans Clear Path for Trump Corruption with Attacks on GAO

June 23, 2025

Washington, D.C. (June 23, 2025)— Today, Rep. Stephen F. Lynch, Acting Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released a statement on House Republicans’ targeted attacks on the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO), which include a 49% proposed cut in funding and a unilateral prohibition on GAO holding the Administration accountable for illegal impoundments of congressionally appropriated funding:

“Decimating the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office will make government less efficient, less accountable, and less responsive to the needs of the American people.  For every dollar invested in the GAO, the American people see a return of at least $76 – so this is not about ‘fiscal responsibility.’  These cuts are a self-inflicted wound meant to obstruct Congress’s ability to check President Trump’s unprecedented corruption, abuse of taxpayer dollars, and complete disregard for our laws and Constitution that define his Administration.

“Speaker Johnson and House Republicans’ complete capitulation to Trump’s thirst for power is dangerous and destabilizing.  Just as Trump fired nonpartisan Inspectors General and sicced DOGE on the civil servants who keep our institutions running honestly, House Republicans are clearing the path for Trump’s corruption by attacking the GAO and undermining its mission to keep government accountable to the people.  Oversight Democrats will fight to keep our nonpartisan watchdogs on the job, and Democrats will fight back against these cuts.”
