Environment Subcommittee to Hold Field Hearing Examining Environmental Justice Issues in Michigan

Washington D.C. (Sept. 11, 2019)—On Monday, September 16, 2019, Rep. Harley Rouda, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Environment, and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Environment, will convene a field hearing entitled "Environmental Injustice: Exploring Inequities in Air and Water Quality in Michigan."

PURPOSE & BACKGROUND

The hearing will examine air and water pollution in Michigan, with a specific focus on Detroit and Flint, and on the disparate impacts of pollution on low-income communities and communities of color. The hearing will explore the negative health effects of living in heavily polluted areas as well as community efforts to hold industry and elected officials accountable for past and current actions.
