Cummings Thanks Barofsky For His Public Service

Press Release

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, today issued a statement following the resignation of the Special Inspector General for TARP, Neil Barofsky.

"I commend Mr. Barofsky for his service to this nation during a time when it was sorely needed," said Cummings. "The incredible work done by Mr. Barofsky and the staff of SIGTARP allowed oversight to be undertaken over a vast program whose scope was almost unequaled in the history of our nation. The TARP program was successful in averting a catastrophic economic collapse and, in part because of the constant and aggressive work of SIGTARP, it also provided this service to the taxpayer at a cost far less than originally estimated. I know I speak for many Members on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee when I say that we will miss Mr. Barofsky’s honest, pragmatic and insightful reports to our Committee, detailing the implementation of the TARP program and offering insights on how it can continue to be improved. I wish him the best as he returns to his family, and thank them for lending him to us for these two years.”
