Cummings Responds to Emails on Meeting  Between Trump Aides and Russian Lawyer

Washington, D.C. (July 11, 2017) – Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement regarding an email chain between Donald J. Trump, Jr. and Rob Goldstone describing that the Russian government wanted to provide “high level and sensitive information” about Secretary Hillary Clinton that was “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump”:

“This is a sad day for our country.  The email chain confirms that the President’s son was both aware of and supported the Russian government’s efforts to help the President get elected.  Our country has a fundamental principle that a foreign adversary should not and cannot interfere with our sacred elections, period.  The soul of our very democracy depends on it.   I remind my colleagues from both parties—the Constitution does not give Congress the right to remain silent in the face of this threat.  We must investigate.  And we must act on our findings.”

In the email chain, Trump, Jr. responded:  “if it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.” Trump Jr. forwarded the email chain to Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort, who attended the meeting.
