Committee Democrats Denounce Trump Administration’s Cruel and Illegal Mass Deportations, Assaults on Freedom and Rule of Law

June 12, 2025

Washington, D.C. (June 12, 2025)— At a hearing called by Republicans to interfere with the policies of American states, Rep. Stephen F. Lynch, Acting Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, led Committee Democrats in condemning the Trump Administration’s extreme mass deportation operations and recent moves to unleash the U.S. military on American cities.  Not only are these efforts cruel, illegal, and a threat to children and families everywhere, but they are also the steppingstone for Trump’s radical attempts to seize absolute power and push America toward authoritarianism, as evidenced by his deployment of active-duty troops into American communities and the assault of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla.

Trump isn’t focused on getting violent criminals off our streets—he’s terrorizing our communities to fulfill deportation quotas with fathers and mothers, grandparents and kids.  And he’s trying to strongarm our city and state leaders to divert their limited resources away from serious public safety threats to instead focus on peaceful, law-abiding families, just as he has diverted federal resources away from combatting drug trafficking, violent crime, and terrorism to fuel his lawless mass deportation campaign,” said Acting Ranking Member Lynch in his opening statement.

Committee Democrats condemned President Trump for putting extremism, cruelty, and chaos above protecting kids and families, denounced President Trump’s attempts to seize absolute power, and vowed to continue fighting for the Constitution, the American people, and safe, effective immigration policies:

  • Acting Ranking Member Lynch kicked off the hearing by standing against President Trump’s militarization of Los Angeles, highlighting that Americans have the right to peacefully assemble without being treated as enemy combatants.

  • Acting Ranking Member Lynch asked Governors Walz, Pritzker, and Hochul how Trump’s assault on the rule of law and deployment of the military threatens the safety of Americans.

  • Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi highlighted how President Trump is manufacturing chaos in Los Angeles to distract from his Big Ugly Bill that cuts Medicaid to give tax breaks to billionaires.

  • Rep. Kweisi Mfume drew on his personal experiences to stand up against the hateful and divisive policies of the Trump Administration.

  • Rep. Shontel Brown underscored that the Trump Administration’s cruel and chaotic immigration agenda has nothing to do with public safety or law and order but instead is a reckless power grab.

  • Rep. Shontel Brown also called out the Trump Administration for making states less safe, including by blocking commonsense gun safety laws, cutting community violence prevention funding, cutting Medicaid and SNAP to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy, and pardoning violent criminals who attack police officers.

  • Rep. Robert Garcia rebuked the Trump Administration for ripping away health care from millions of Americans across the country, including children and veterans—a grave threat that all three governors agreed was a far greater danger to the residents of their states than the law-abiding immigrants and children that the Trump Administration is hunting down and deporting.

  • Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost emphasized that the Trump Administration’s suppression of Americans’ First Amendment rights is not separate from their plan to take health care away from 15 million people to benefit billionaires—they know it’s the only way they might get away with it.

  • Rep. Summer Lee highlighted how the Trump Administration’s extreme mass deportation operation means kids are afraid to go to school and toddlers are being forced to represent themselves in court.

  • Rep. Melanie Stansbury emphasized the deep unpopularity of President Trump’s deployment of the U.S. military on American streets.

  • Rep. Greg Casar revealed how President Trump is undermining the rights that protect all of us, including American citizens.

  • Rep. Rashida Tlaib rebuked Republicans for purposely refusing to come together to fix the broken immigration system, calling for humanity.

  • Rep. Jasmine Crockett called out the waste of taxpayer dollars on President Trump’s militarization of Los Angeles.

  • Rep. Ayanna Pressley spoke on how President Trump’s cuts to Medicaid will devastate Americans who will be forced to go bankrupt to keep their loved ones alive.

  • Rep. Pressley also reminded Republicans that President Trump keeps breaking the law and losing in the courts, directly contradicting their claims that they care about law and order.

  • Rep. Lateefah Simon condemned President Trump and Republicans for slashing funds and resources for public safety across the country.

  • Rep. Yassamin Ansari called out President Trump for acting like a dictator.

  • Rep. Ro Khanna stood up for the Constitution and defended Americans’ right to peacefully protest.

  • Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton dove into how Trump’s cruel immigration policies are harming children and interfering with their education.

  • Rep. Dave Min underscored the illegality of President Trump deploying the National Guard onto the streets of Los Angeles for law enforcement purposes.

  • Rep. Wesley Bell debunked Trump’s immigration agenda, highlighting how it endangers American citizens and law enforcement officers.

  • Rep. Suhas Subramanyam called out President Trump for misusing law enforcement for political ends, including to detain kids, and reminded Committee Republicans that this is not what our country is supposed to be about.
