Ranking Member Raskin Condemns House Republican Legislation Targeting Reproductive Freedom
Washington, D.C. (Jan. 11, 2023)—Today, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, issued the following statement on House Republicans passing H.R. 26, which politicizes reproductive health care and criminalizes doctors and nurses who provide abortion services, and H. Con. Res. 3, which ignores the spike in violence and threats to abortion providers and patients:
"In their first week controlling the House legislative agenda, Republicans have already previewed for America the internal chaos and dangerous policy extremism of their conference. Today's legislation showcases their fanatical commitment to impair women's reproductive freedom and demonize patients and health care providers along the way. Democrats, of course, oppose violence in all its forms; Republicans will only go on record as opposing violence against anti-abortion groups and centers. As Republicans pursue their warped crusade against health care options available to American women, Democrats will continue to stand with the vast majority of Americans who support abortion rights to ensure that every person can make their own health decisions and lead a life free of control by government and right-wing politicians."
During the 117th Congress, the Oversight Committee held three hearings examining the harm of state abortion bans and restrictions and the threat of a Republican national abortion ban.
