Ahead of Hearing, Select Subcommittee Democrats Release Factsheet Revealing House GOP’s Refusal to Protect America’s Public Health

April 18, 2023

Every Select Subcommittee Republican Voted Against Provisions to Prevent and Prepare for Future Pandemics

Washington, D.C. (April 18, 2023)—Today, Rep. Raul Ruiz, M.D., Ranking of Member of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, released a new factsheet detailing Select Subcommittee Republicans' refusal to protect America's public health and their opposition to commonsense pandemic prevention and preparedness policies.

Last year, House Democrats secured landmark reforms in H.R. 2617, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, to strengthen America's ability to respond to future public health threats. These reforms included provisions to revitalize the public health workforce, prevent undue foreign influence in biomedical research, ensure the rapid development of future medical countermeasures, protect vital medical supply chains, and more. All Select Subcommittee Republicans voted against the funding package.

Additionally, H.R. 2617 included provisions championed by Ranking Member Ruiz to protect medical supply chains and strengthen America's Strategic National Stockpile of personal protective equipment and more.

"While our intelligence community continues to collect and analyze information that will bring us closer to a definitive conclusion, Democrats have worked to prevent and better prepare for the next public health crisis so that we can keep the American people safe," said Ranking Member Ruiz, M.D.

Ranking Member Ruiz released the factsheet ahead of the Select Subcommittee's hearing titled "Investigating the Origins of COVID-19, Part 2: China and the Available Intelligence."
