CHAIRMAN CUMMINGS' OPENING STATEMENT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

From January 20, 2017, to March 20, 2018, Mr. McAleenan served as the Acting Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection (CBP). On March 20, 2018, Mr. McAleenan began serving as CBP Commissioner. On April 10, 2019, President Trump named Mr. McAleenan as Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), following the resignation of Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. Mr. McAleenan currently serves in both roles—CBP Commissioner and Acting DHS Secretary. The hearing will examine the Trump Administration’s child separation policy, the treatment of immigrants detained in U.S. government facilities, and related issues.
