Press Release

Washington, D.C. (October 18, 2020)—Today, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, issued the following statement in response to the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) announcement of its intent to start regulating robotexts:

“My constituents have been flooded with increasingly sophisticated robotext scams.  After I alerted FCC to the issue, we sat down with the Commission last month to voice concerns and discuss solutions.  Obviously, it was a productive conversation, and I am eager to review the details of this proposed rule.  Today’s announcement was a strong step in the right direction, and I look forward to working with FCC Acting Chairwoman Rosenworcel to end robotext scams once and for all.”

On August 20, 2021, the Subcommittee sent a letter to Acting Chairwoman Rosenworcel outlining the scam robotexting issue, and asking for a briefing.  FCC provided that briefing on September 16, 2021.  Today, FCC announced proposed rulemaking to require wireless providers to block illegal text messages.
