The Capitol Insurrection: Unexplained Delays and Unanswered Questions
Chairwoman Maloney's Opening Statement [PDF]
On Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at 10:00 a.m., Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, will hold a hybrid hearing to examine the events of January 6, 2021, in which insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol to disrupt a joint session of Congress convened to count the Electoral College votes of the 2020 presidential election. This hearing will focus in particular on the Trump Administrationâs preparations in advance of January 6 and response to the attacks.
On January 16, 2021, the Oversight Committee joined the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Committee on Homeland Security, and the House Committee on the Judiciary in sending a letter to U.S. Intelligence Community agencies requesting intelligence products and briefings related to the January 6, 2021, attack.
On March 25, 2021, these Committees and the House Committee on Armed Services, Committee on House Administration, and House Appropriations Subcommittees on Defense, Interior, and the Legislative Branch, sent letters to sixteen federal, congressional, and District of Columbia departments and agencies requesting a broad array of documents relating to the January 6 attack.
The hearing will also consider the response of federal and local law enforcement agencies to the attack, and the need to establish a bipartisan, â9/11-styleâ commission, so that Congress and the American people can fully understand the causes and circumstances that led to the January 6, 2021, insurrection.
