Oversight Committee Requests Bipartisan Briefing on
Decision to Classify Information About U.S. Spending in Afghanistan

Washington, DC—Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement about looming across-the-board automatic spending cuts that start on Friday:
"Sequestration is like a giant meat cleaver about to descend on core services that middle-class families across the country rely on every single day. It will cause more than a million federal workers to be furloughed and severely damage our nation's economic recovery.
Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and Rep. Mike Quigley, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on TARP, Financial Services and Bailouts of Public and Private Programs, sent a letter to Subcommittee Chairman Patrick McHenry urging him to postpone tomorrow's hearing on the Administration's auto bailout to allow further consultations with witnesses.
Washington, DC – Today, the Oversight and Government Reform Committee unanimously agreed to the inclusion of an amendment by Ranking Member Elijah E. Cummings to use revenue generated from tax levies on Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) accounts to pay down the nation's deficit.
"Let me be clear: this revenue should be used to reduce the federal deficit," Cummings said. "It should not be used to pay for a transportation bill or any other government program."
